May Recap

Hello hello! Another month gone and a missed mid-month update (oops) and now its summer! What?! 🤯

We started May off with a family trip to California for a few days. It was a great trip but traveling with a toddler is exhausting haha. So the trip and the recovery from the trip meant that not much art happened in the first half of the month, hence the missed blog update. The second half of the month however was very arty. To jump back into gear I went through the entire book You Can Draw in 30 Days by Mark Kistler. It was so nice to go back to some fundamental shapes and practice that way. And also to not have to think too hard about what I was going to practice that day. A common theme this year…

Here are some of my practice exercises

My next project was part of my experiment to find and refine my process. The goal was to paint five 5”x7” watercolor and ink trees and to take mental notes of each part of the process. My big takeaway is that while I do I like working small and somewhat simply something about this project feels unfinished, like there should be more to each piece. I also realized that I need better reference photos for color purposes. The photos I used were great for shape reference but the light and shadows weren’t great.

So moving on to June! I plan on doing another small scale project. Theme and parameters tbd but I think it will still be 3-5 small-ish watercolor pieces. I am also starting an in-person acrylic and oil painting class so that should be fun and will hopefully result in some new skills and confidence 😁

I think those are all the updates for now. Make sure to sign up for my email list for more in-depth studio updates once a month. Thank you so much as always for reading and I hope you have a wonderful June!!
